My Brief Visit in Singapore

'Welcome to Singapore' by Seh Hui

Last Saturday I finally set foot on Singapore. As a Malaysian, usually that’s the first overseas destination, especially after considering the fact that Singapore is a popular destination for primary schools to have their graduation trip.

This was really a short trip with two strong motivations for me to be there: Geekcamp Singapore and the day when I finally get my hands on the iPad. That goes without saying that I’m really excited about the trip.

Geekcamp turns out to be awesome and I really regret that I was only able to be there for half of the sessions. Partly due to our delayed flight as well having myself slipping away during the lunch break to hunt down the iPad. It’s really hard not to be envious towards the Singaporeans seeing the …

Just to make damn sure that I could get my hands on an iPad, this is what I ended up with:

'iPad Hunting Map'

The worst case scenario would mean that I’m embarking on a journey as epic as The Amazing Race: the distance itself to visit every store could add up to a full marathon, if not more.

… or maybe it’s wake-up call that I need more friends who could help me buy it from Apple Online Store instead?

If you had noticed, I’ll be attending GeekCamp Singapore, which will be held at Singapore Management University on 4 September 2010. I’m totally excited about it seeing the list of topics that were covered: from face recognition to iAds.

Looking forward to see you there! 😊

Phuket Adventures #4: A Few Short Stories

Here are a few short stories that I couldn’t quite tie into the three-part travelogue that I had written up. You could read the previous entries here:

Camera Panic! – A Blessing in Disguise

Every adventure has its unexpected moments: my first happened just before I set off to Phuket.

Like any other traveler, I always keep a list of things to pack and made sure that I had everything I needed. As I thought everything is perfectly as planned, Murphy’s law proved otherwise. Checking my gear almost gave me a heart attack: the battery for camera decided to pass away peacefully without me realizing it. As a photography enthusiast, a camera with dead …

'Carressing the Sand' by Seh Hui

You could only claimed to have visited Phuket after you’d soaked yourself in the beautiful sea waters there. I can certainly testify for that.

After two days of touring, the skins around my body are itching to get into the sea waters. How one could resist? The crystalline waters, the sandy white beaches, the sounds of the waves… that’s my perfect paradise.

It’s really popular among tourists to go for a tour to Phi Phi island; I had decided on something different. I had spent some time studying Phi Phi tour itineraries when I was there and find them quite rushed with about seven spots to visit. Preferring a relaxed trip, I had decided to go for a tour to Khai islands.

Phuket Adventures #2: The Rainy Season

'Lone Rock' by Seh Hui

It’s July – the monsoon months in Phuket, a time when one would have to expect some wind, rain and rough seas. Although it’s a low season in Phuket, you’ll easily notice that this warning doesn’t hinder fellow travellers around the world to enjoy their getaway in this lovely land.

'Sea View' by Seh Hui

9 o’clock in the morning, our day started off with tints of gray, the skies are covered with an overcast of lumping clouds. As one would look up the skies with worried eyes, I could only notice how fast the clouds crawls from one side of the other with no sun in sight.

“I had signed up for a sight-seeing tour today…” I thought to myself, praying hard that I won’t be completely drenched by rain when I got back …

'Bird's eye view on one of Phuket's Island' by Seh Hui

I’m seated quite comfortably during my flight, other than the fact my legs are twisted in a slightly odd angle to overcome the cramped space in front of me. Yet despite that, I felt like being on the edge of my seat: I’m having travel anxieties.

My brain was constantly reminded of the thought that it is my very first time planning for a trip and no amount of work I had done before seemed enough to quiet down the nagging thoughts that I could have missed something.

“Relax… take a deep breath”, I told myself, repeatedly, making a conscious attempt to calm my nerves down.

The humming of jet engines in the background was then interrupted by a cheerful voice through the intercom, “We’ll be arriving at Phuket in 15 minutes …

It’s not crazy, it’s just Cambodia (Part I)

Hmm… probably it’d been better if I had written my experience down in a diary or something while I’m travelling, somehow it just felt different when I’m trying to write this trying to jog back my memories weeks ago. But anyway, here’s my recollection of my travels.

So, basically, the whole journey revolves around Phonm Penh, Kompong Thom and Siem Reap. And that noon of 13 May, there’s quite a lot of small bumps, especially the fact that I’m late, turning back half way on the road to get my forgotten camera and rushing into checking in… but still I manage to get to the Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) on time :). So the whole troupe consist of myself, Yuan Hui (my colleague), his boyfriend, his brother and five …

Penang Trip Day 3 (2 May): Departure: Of Panic and Misfortunes

So it’s finally time for us to depart, before that, we went to Prangin Mall with Stanley one last time (well… as in for this trip, not forever XD) and have fun with the linked machine again. Then we had lunch in a restaurant near by with me trying out the tasty prawn noodles (or Hokkien Mee). Then Tommy and Stanley wanted to go to a cyber cafe to have a few games, and since I know that once I got connected, I can’t get off from it for at least an hour, so I decided to go for a stroll. I told them that I won’t be joining them and promised that I’ll meet them up later.

But when I finished with my stroll and check the cyber cafe, they …

Penang Trip Day 2: Silence and Motion… and Squeals!

We woke up really early today (around 10, I think). We are on our own in the morning, since everyone is busy, so we are free to do whatever we want. So there both Tommy and I rushed out to Komtar (next to Prangin Mall) as soon we are done with our early morning routine. There, we had fun with the 1st Mix PLUS machine there, not to mention it’s only 50 cents per game, and each game consist of 5 songs! (AH! Paradise! <3)

After a nice workout, we went to the food stalls near by and try out some Penang delicacies. I order one bowl of Kuey Teow Soup (basically a kind of Chinese noodle) and yum! It’s really yummy and sweet! And then I went to a CD shop… and …

Penang Trip DAY 1: The Late Arrival

It’s a sunny morning at 10:30p.m. when I patiently wait in A&W for Tommy to arrive, everything seems to be so sunny and exciting inside that it’s hard to wipe off my smile from my face. Soon after, Tommy just shown up and he was as excited as I was! 😊 After some idle chatter and some excitement exchange, we went to the bus station together. The bus is punctual and off we go to our own adventure!

Of course, not everything goes as expected though. Apparently we have underestimated the time required to go to Penang and the the seriousness of the traffic jam on the way to the highway. And even funnier, the bus suddenly took a turn to my home town and I was surprised and puzzled and …
